In the Preface of the book, I write:
“There is always a back story behind news headlines, personal events, and historical occurrences. Prison is no different.
“40 Years a Prisoner chronicles some of the back stories of my 40-year incarceration in the Louisiana prison system, from 1966 to 2006.
“Most of these back stories are based on my firsthand knowledge. In others, I have taken a literary license to recreate third-party conversations based on information supplied to me by sources aware of the meetings and circumstances under which the conversations took place.
“Are these verbatim accounts? Most assuredly not.
“But events and issues are sometimes best told and described in dialogue. It enriches a story. Human memory can recount past conversations through recreated dialogue when the writer makes every effort to remain committed to a truthful and accurate retelling process.
“40 Years a Prisoner is narrative nonfiction. I’ve taken headlines, events, and occurrences, and re-told them through the prism of my personal experience.”
If you want to know about crime between keeper and kept, the prevalence of corruption in a penal system rotten to its core, and the dangers and struggles for survival in this kind of penal system, I urge you to read 40 Years a Prisoner. If nothing else, it will make you think, make you angry, prompt you to curse, force you to wipe tears from your eyes, and, most importantly, it will make you reflect with the simple question: what would I have done in the same situation?
You will find courage when there is fear, hope when there is none, and love against all the odds. Prison, as you will see in 40 years a prisoner, is just a reflection into your own world—a world in which you navigate for survival each and every day you are on this planet.
